Your First Visit
Before the First Visit
Please discuss the positive aspects of dentistry with your child. Convey good feelings to your child about dental visits being a part of growing up. Please do not say, “The dentist will not hurt you.” Instead, say, “The dentist will be very gentle with you while looking at your teeth.” If you or anyone around the child has an existing fear of the dentist, work hard not to transfer these fears to your child. Parents are extremely important in ensuring their children have a great dental experience. We will take care of the rest!
At the First Visit
Dr. Whitfield & Dr. Eckroat follow and abide by the guidelines provided by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. We recommend that children experience their first dental visit by no later than their 1st birthday or six months after their first tooth erupts. Our doctors will discuss the importance of caring for and preventing dental disease through topics such as oral hygiene and proper nutrition and will discuss growth of your child, dental development, and any associated oral habits.
The parent or legal guardian must accompany the child to the first visit so they can detail accurate and appropriate medical and dental information.
The first visit usually includes: Comprehensive examination, dental cleaning, fluoride varnish treatment, and any appropriate digital dental imaging when necessary.
Dr. Whitfield nor Dr. Eckroat usually remove cavities and provide fillings on the first appointment
